I want to talk to you today about Branding.
More specifically, branding YOU.
You know when we get into Network Marketing we’re usually so excited because we’ve identified with a company or identified with a product so strongly that we want to let everyone know about it. And that’s fine, but you have to be careful that you don’t brand yourself as the company or the product.
For example I’ve seen people who are branding themselves as the iPhoneGuy or the VideoPhoneKing. Or they name themselves the name of the product itself. Bad news! Sometimes companies change or products are discontinued, and now you’ve spent a lot of time branding yourself to something that no longer exists.
Now, I don’t want you to take what I’m saying the wrong way here. It’s ok to promote your product or your company, but you don’t want people to identify YOU as your product or company. You don’t want to be known as the ExcelCommunications Guy. You want to be known as Your Name, who promotes Excel Communications.
Remember, this is still a relationship business. Don’t lose sight of that. Your product can be the most amazing thing since the Pet Rock, but in the end it’s just a product and they come and go. You want people to join you because you’re the kind of person they want to be a partner with.
Keep this in mind; most women don’t get married because of the ring… Well, some do, but it’s not a very good relationship and it usually ends early. On the other hand, if they get married based upon the relationship, there’s a better chance they’ll stay together.
It’s the same with Distributors. We want to build teams that are going to stick together through thick and thin, because if God forbid something happens to your company, you want to be able to move wherever you decide to go as a team.
And that’s what we’re trying to teach you at Mentoring for Free. Yeah, the 5 Pillars are important, the Business Model is important, but the bottom line is; Business is Business. And the Company itself is a business. Businesses change, products change, comp plans change. Policies and Procedures change, but the one thing that you want to remain constant is You and your relationship with your team and You and your relationship with your customers and peers.
You can only do that by branding yourself as YOU, not some product or company.
You know, I tell you this stuff because I’ve been there. Before I found Mentoring For Free I tried so many things, but never once did I try them as myself. I tried to hide behind whatever product I was promoting or website I built. I had a website called ineedtoberich.com and I used to be an affiliate for Robert Kiyosaki selling those Cash flow games and Rich Dad books and products. But nobody knew my name.
When my mentor Emmanuel first contacted me, it was on MySpace and I was Ineedtoberich. I wasn’t David Haines. I saved the emails he used to send me where he would start the letter by saying, hello friend. It’s pretty comical when I look back at them. We’re both green, so it took us 3 emails back and forth before Emmanuel had the guts to ask me my name.
And one of the scariest things I had to do when I started in Network Marketing was to put myself out there as ME. I was afraid to let anyone know my name. I don’t know why, but I just was. And Oh My God, build relationships with people? Blasphemy! But I knew it had to be done. What I had been doing all those years before didn’t work, and I probably tried every way I could without actually connecting with people.
Emmanuel and I have a running joke that my wife Tianne cringes every time I say it, but I always joke with Emmanuel that “They will know my name!” And although it’s a joke, it’s kind of my Mantra. It had to be extreme enough for me to take it seriously enough to act on it. One of the commitments I made to him when I started this process was that I was going to totally change everything I was doing and everything that I was. So this Mantra fit quite well. And I have just enough Red in me to enjoy it a little bit.
So I’ve tried really hard the last 3 years to brand myself as Me, and position myself as someone people could come to. People come to me to learn about relationship building and to learn about Branding and about social media
A big part of that branding was to improve myself. I knew that in order to lead others, I had to learn how to lead, but most importantly to get out of my own way. I had to become the person people wanted to be in business with. And I did that through the Mental Cleanse. I worked on myself just as hard as I worked on my brand.
My biggest advice to you is to really take the time to work on a marketing strategy to brand You.
Become the person that people follow because they know you can help them. They will follow you because you can care about them. What’s that quote from John Maxwell, “People don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care.” And that’s so true. Are you really helping them because you want them to succeed, or because you want them to help you succeed?
My agenda when I started this process 3 years ago was to get people in my business because I wanted them to do all the work. Find 5 or 6 people and let them build it! And you know what? People felt that, and I didn’t sponsor my first person into the business for 10 months, and he stayed for 2 months and quit. My second person stayed for 3 months and quit. My 3rd person was my son and he never really did anything. Then I received what I thought was the greatest gift ever. Our team was following the tap-rooting theory of building a team, and because of that, my upline reorganized and threw about 30 people in my downline along my taproot.
If you don’t know what a taproot is, open up Google and do a search, it’s a method of building the various legs in your organization by placing people at the bottom of the leg and helping them do the same. Anyway, like I said, one day I woke up and went from 3 people to 33. I was the happiest guy on earth!
But you know what? I still wasn’t the guy people wanted to follow. I look at it like the people that win the lottery but have no idea how to manage money. 99% are back to the same place they were financially after a year, than they were before they won the lottery. And you know what? The same thing happened to me. Not one of those 30 people is active today.
It was a very hard lesson to learn. But it did teach me that I needed to fix myself. And I’m working my ass off to do that to this day. I’m not anywhere that I want to be yet, but I continually try to improve every day and I still live by my mantra of “They will know my name!” Tianne just rolled her eyes!
But in all seriousness, help people know who you are. Be YOU. That’s the one thing that nobody can ever take away from you.
